Metro cops chief in limbo

Four months after the start of an investigation against him, Johannesburg Metro Police Department chief Chris Ngcobo still does not know his fate.

Four months after the start of an investigation against him, Johannesburg Metro Police Department chief Chris Ngcobo still does not know his fate.

Ngcobo took special leave in February while claims against him and three senior officials were probed.

JMPD officers affiliated to the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) went on a one-week strike in February, calling for a probe into Ngcobo's conduct and the three other suspended officials. The three are Abel Nkosi,Elmarie de Beer and Koti Essau, who are being investigated for fraud.

Investigations into Ngcobo started in March and were supposed to be concluded in 90 days.

Joburg City spokesperson Gabu Tugwana said: "The union asked for more time to prepare and the proceedings took longer than expected."

But Dumisani Langa of Samwu said the delay has been caused by the fact that a lot of witnesses were called to testify.
