AN 11-MONTH-OLD Limpopo baby was stabbed to death with a knife by his father while on the mother's back.
The incident took place at the Nancefield hostel in Musina on Saturday during a squabble over booze between the parents.
Limpopo police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba said yesterday that the baby was stabbed in the head by the angry father and died instantly while sleeping on his mother's back.
The mother had allegedly remonstrated with the 57-year-old husband about booze when the incident happened.
He said the man chased the mother with a knife and stabbed the boy.
Ramatseba said the man was arrested and would appear in the Musina magistrate's court today.
In a separate incident on Saturday a 29-year-old security guard at Eerstegeluk clinic in Mapodile in the Sekhukhune district shot his 34-year-old girlfriend in the head after an argument about "jolling". She survived.
The police said when the woman fell to the ground the gunman thought she was dead. He committed suicide by turning the gun on himself.
The woman is fighting for her life in a local hospital.
Also on Saturday, a Vuwani police detective, Phillip Ramabulana, went home after work, closed the door and shot himself to death in the head.
The 42-year-old Ramabulana was a resident of Ramukhuba village outside Thohoyandou and was attached to the Vuwani police station.
The police said it was not yet known why he took his own life and investigations were under way.
In another incident that sent shock waves throughout the province, a 40-year-old Limpopo man assaulted his girlfriend, Ruth Ngobeni, with a baton until she died.
Ramatseba said the motive for the man's actions were not yet known but the couple had a fierce argument.
Ramatseba said aftert killing the woman the man, Asani Baloyi of Iketleng village in Bolobedu near Modjadjiskloof, wrote a letter to his mother telling her that she would find him in the mortuary.
"He then set the shack in which he was living alight and hanged himself from a branch of a nearby tree.
"We understand the man had romantic problems with the girlfriend."
Ramatseba pleaded with communities to consult community leaders such as pastors and ward councillors, or the victim empowerment project at all police stations, when they encounter problems in their relationships.
