THE total number of mine deaths in South Africa since the beginning of this year is nearing the 100 mark after three fatalities at Impala Platinum's Rustenburg operations yesterday.

Excluding yesterday's fatalities at Implats, the official number of death recorded by the Department of Minerals and Energy until yesterday morning was 95.

Earlier reports yesterday by the National Union of Mineworkers said eight workers were trapped underground at Impala Platinum after a "fall of ground" incident.

The incident occurred at about noon. The company later announced the death of two workers. The third body was recovered last night.

Implats CEO David Brown said: "We are deeply shocked by this major incident and our deepest condolences go out to the loved ones of the people who lost their lives."
