The ANC has over the weekend announced that it had dissolved the North West and Western Cape provincial structures.
While these are not as sexy to read about as the possible disintegration of Cope, the ANC is in power in North West and by all accounts lost it in Western Cape precisely because of these divisions.
While nobody really suffers from a dysfunctional opposition political party, the ructions between ANC members in North West have a direct effect on the millions who voted for the party in the hope that it would bring about a better life for them.
One does not have to be a member or a supporter of the ANC to acknowledge that for millions of South Africans it is no ordinary party. It is the embodiment of their hopes for a better life.
Strife between members jockeying for positions and the attendant wealth delays programmes aimed at making their lives better.
We will not be as naïve as to believe that ANC leaders are driven by the same zeal that saw many consciously place themselves in the way of harm during the apartheid days.
But we hope that the ANC leadership will continue to prevail over such attitudes that make a mockery of a movement that was once a trusted outlet for the aspirations of the oppressed and dispossessed.
