LONDON - Theft crimes such as pick-pocketing and bag snatching soared by a quarter over the past year, while violent crime was slightly lower, UK government statistics showed yesterday.

Bicycle theft also rose sharply by 22percent, according to data from the British Crime Survey, suggesting that a falling economy is encouraging more stealing.

The figures, based on interviews with people aged over 16, failed to tally with police crime statistics, which showed a drop in theft generally. - Reuters
