THE newly launched KwaZulu-Natal Youth Chamber of Commerce will try to boost opportunities for young businesspeople at the World Cup next year.

The chamber represents the interests of youth-owned businesses, young entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs in KwaZulu-Natal and is sponsored by the provincial department of economic development and tourism.

Its mission is to unlock viable business opportunities by creating a capacity within young people to develop sustainable businesses.

The chamber also aims to champion economic transformation in the province by providing effective services that respond to the needs of the young.

Interim chief executive Sindi Shabalala said the organisation hoped to give young entrepreneurs access to publicity, business intelligence and information services, mentorship, workshops and seminars.

"We want to ensure that the youth obtain at least 40percent of the procurement opportunities available in the public sector," Shabalala said.

"We will also pursue partnerships with key government agencies and build relationships with big business."

The organisation will stage awareness campaigns and appear at expos and exhibitions to educate young entrepreneurs, she said.
