AFTER an intensive 10-day training camp in Egypt, Volleyball South Africa men's senior team are confident of qualifying for the World Championships in Italy next year.

To book a place in the finals in Italy, the South Africans must finish on top of the log in qualifiers in Yaounde next month. Besides hosts Cameroon and South Africa, two other countries - Zimbabwe and Mauritius - will participate in the qualifiers are .

South Africa did not have to take part in the pre-qualifiers after defeating Algeria in the same round two years ago.

Said Patrick Klostermann, a senior member of the South African team: "The camp in Egypt was helpful because we also played a series of games against their national teams.

"It's not that we underestimate the other teams but the biggest challenge for us will come from Cameroon and we are ready for them. We have a pretty good chance of emerging on top of the log and qualifying for the World Championships. Our guys are in good shape and have been exposed to international volleyball."

Klostermann was one of the three national team players who represented University Sport South Africa at the recent World Student Games in Serbia. The other two were Muzi Dlamini and Grant Goldschmid.

South Africa are likely to travel to Yaounde without their longest-serving player, Andile Masinga, due to a knee injury.

On Sunday, the women's national team fly to Algiers for World Championships qualifiers against Algeria, Tunisia and Mauritius.
