The team won nine medals - two gold, two silver and five bronze - to finish 23rd overall on the medal table.
Sibabalwe Mzazi, 10000m, and Sunette Viljoen, javelin, won the two gold medals. Lehann Fourie, 110m hurdles, and Isabel Le Roux, 200m, grabbed silver medals.
The five bronze medal winners were Thuso Mpuang, 200m, Leone Vorster, 400m freestyle, Elroy Gelant, 5000m, and Lungisa Mdedelwa, 10000m.
"This is a major success for Team South Africa at the World Student Games since we started participating in the competition in 1993," said Sanele Madlala, president of University Sport South Africa (Ussa).
"Our success in Serbia in the past two weeks has helped lay a solid foundation in our preparations for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
"It is good that some of the athletes in Serbia were using the World Student Games as part of their preparation for the Commonwealth Games in India next year."
Madlala says they hope to win more medals at the 26th World Student Games in Shenzhen, China, in 2011.
"And we will need more support from the corporate world do it," he said.
"We are grateful to the National Lottery Distribution Fund and SA Sport Confederation and Olympic Committee for their support."
Malumbete Ralethe, Federation of International University Sport executive member and former Ussa president, said:
"We have to sit down with the business sector and explain to them that for our country to do well at the Olympics, athletes going to events like the World Student Games must be supported financially."
