A SERVICE delivery protest in Khayelitsha in Western Cape has left one person hospitalised, the organisers Abahlali baseMjondolo said.

"More than 15 people were shot at with rubber bullets by the SAPS and metro police in yesterday's protest at Khayelitsha. One of them is in a critical condition at Groote Schuur Hospital," the anti-poverty organisation Abahlali baseMjondolo said in a statement.

"Police had to fire rubber bullets at community members who were protesting to control the situation," said Constable Mthokozisi Gama.

Gama said no injuries were reported.

The protest lasted four hours before dispersion at 9pm. Gama said protesters burnt tyres, pelted police with stones and set a Golden Arrow bus ablaze.

A case of malicious damage to property had been opened.
