COSATU in KwaZulu-Natal is hosting its "biggest provincial elective congress" from today to Friday.
The conference in Durban will focus on the effect of the economic downturn on workers.
Cosatu deputy national secretary Khaye Nkwanyana said the congress would pass resolutions setting priorities it wanted the ANC-led provincial government to implement.
"We want to hold the party accountable for commitments it made to voters during the election campaign."
About 1300 delegates are expected for the three-day congress at the Exhibition Centre. The congress will be addressed by Premier Zweli Mkhize and Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.
Nkwanyana said Cosatu had its own priorities that it wanted the ANC to implement.
"We recently lost 117000 jobs in this province alone since many companies were retrenching because of economic meltdown, but we want Mkhize to drive programmes in terms of which he will enter into agreements with companies and organised business to save jobs," Nkwanyana said.
"We don't want job losses to continue."
The congress will also take stock of the work done by the province, especially its "key leading role in defence of ANC president Jacob Zuma, the campaign towards the Polokwane conference and the ANC provincial conference".
