IT IS important for consumers to know their rights and what to do if they are not given the right treatment in stores.

IT IS important for consumers to know their rights and what to do if they are not given the right treatment in stores.

The South African National Consumer Union has documented eight key rights:

The right to be heard.

The retailer, supplier or a senior representative must listen to consumer complaints.

The right to safety.

Consumers must be protected against hidden dangers in products or services.

The right to redress.

When you are sold an inferior product or service, you have the right to demand a replacement or a refund.

The right to a healthy environment.

Consumers have the right to an environment that will enhance quality of life.

The right to be informed.

Consumers have the right to the information they need about a product or service.

The right to choose.

Consumers must insist on a variety of products and goods.

The right to consumer education.

Consumers have the right to demand education in consumer affairs.

The right to satisfaction of basic needs.
