KWAITO star Chomee has a special surprise for former president Nelson Mandela.

She will unveil the present when she performs at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Johannesburg on Saturday, where a host of local musicians will perform in celebration of Madiba's life.

Many other activities have been lined up in various capitals of the world to celebrate Mandela Day.

The song was penned by five people, including Chomee and her producer Arthur Mafokate from 999 Music.

"It was decided that she [Chomee] should sing it because she is the only one who would have the right appeal to the people. People like her. Tata Mandela does not know about it yet, it's going to be a surprise," said Mafokate.

"The song will be released as a download and all proceeds will go to the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund. If people like it, we will release it as a single."

He said the song was in the mode of the late Michael Jackson'sHeal the World, a completely different offering to what Chomee's fans are accustomed to.

In the song, titled Prisoner to Present, the dancing queen pays tribute to Madiba's quest for the freedom of South Africa and its people.

She hails him as a man of inspiration, dedication dignity and kindness.

"From Prison to President, Hear our voices cheer, From Prison to President, We so glad that you are here, The Hero of our nation, The Hero of the world, Your name will be remembered (Madiba)," goes the chorus of the song.

Chomee told Sowetan she was honoured and thrilled at the prospect of delivering the song as a present to Madiba.

"It's not only a gift for his birthday but also a way of saying thank you for everything he has done for the whole world.

"I feel very proud to come from the same country as the man who has touched everybody in the world," she said.
