RURAL Development and Land Reform Minister Gugile Nkwinti has obtained an urgent court order against an attorney who allegedly "disappeared" with almost R5million earmarked for a land claim settlement.

Judge Ephraim Makgoba granted the order on Tuesday in the North Gauteng high court in Pretoria.

It compelled Brandfort attorney Zibutha Mokoena to immediately pay almost R4million to Limpopo farm owner Morris Chokoe - or to the department.

The department bought the farm in 2008 in settlement of a land claim by the Nthabalala Royal Council.

It appointed Mokoena as attorney to handle the registration of transfer of the property.

Mokoena has been reported to the Law Society, which could take up to six months to hear his case. - Sapa
