CELEBRATED rugby and boxing commentator Dumile Mateza has confirmed that Sports Minister Makhenkesi Stofile has appointed him to find ways to turn boxing around for the better.
Mateza said he and Mesuli Zifo, a top boxing writer for the Daily Dispatch in East London, were appointed on June 18 in Cape Town after a meeting with Stofile.
Mateza said Deputy sports Minister Gert Oosthuizen and director- general of sport Vernie Petersen were also part of that meeting.
Mateza was chief executive officer of the seven-member interim national commission that was appointed by Balfour in 2002 to sort out the SA National Boxing Control Commission, which was bankrupt.
He said their task was "to examine the weaknesses in the Boxing Act, (and to) solicit views from stakeholders to find out how can boxing be structured once and for all so that it becomes a viable organisation in terms of money (self sufficient)."
Gossipmongers had already set the ball rolling. A distinguished member of the boxing fraternity was overheard saying the appointment of the two was Stofile's first step towards getting rid of the four-man board of Boxing SA.
Mateza would not entertain the claims.
"We will look into the corporate governance, administration, financial control and the functions of Boxing SA. Our task involves looking at how boxing can help the stakeholders, who will be interviewed," he said.
"After that we will then compile a report which will have their recommendations, and it will be presented to the minister who will call for a convention either in October or November.
"That is where the contents of that report will be discussed and crystalised. This is an opportunity for stakeholders to have an input in amending the Act. Their recommendations will form the basis to amend the Act".
Mateza believes there is room for a return of the provincial commissions that were abolished by Balfour.
"They may not be in the form they were before." he said.
"We will also talk to the current board because we believe they have ideas," added Mateza, who is a commentator for TV boxing show Blow by Blow.
