KwaZulu-Natal MEC for transport, community safety and liaison Bheki Cele said his department would have no mercy for corrupt RTI officials.
Cele was speaking in Pietermaritzburg yesterday at a passing out parade of 107 RTI officers. "Never indulge in corrupt practices such as bribery," Cele said. "Always remember that the department has no place for corrupt traffic officers."
He said South Africa could not afford to continue losing about 16000 lives through accidents every year as a result of corruption.
"Not only is the pain and suffering immeasurable for victims and their families, but the cost to the economy is more than R56billion a year.
"Quite clearly no sober-minded person will relax in the presence of these horrible statistics."
Cele said increasing the number of RTI officers was one way to avoid further loss of lives.
He said at the moment there were about 938 RTI officers in the province.
Cele said this number would increase with the appointment of more recruits.
Of the 107 recruits, 46 were women. This showed a growing trend towards gender equity.
