An ALLEGED notorious murderer, rapist and robber and two of his accomplices have been arrested.

The three were found with police gear that included uniforms, reflector jackets and handcuffs. They were arrested in Mpumalanga at the weekend.

Stuurman Masombuka, alias "Sturu", of Tweefontein G in the former Kwa-Ndebele was arrested while in bed on Sunday - two weeks after he was released on bail for similar offences.

After his arrest, the most feared man in the Tweefontein area allegedly led police to his two accomplices.

It was during the arrests and intense follow-up investigations that police confiscated police uniforms, handcuffs, holsters, rain suits, reflector jackets and a name tag.

They also recovered five stolen cellphones and numerous SIM cards.

Superintendent Abie Khoabane of Mpumalanga provincial police said Masombuka was initially arrested for armed robberies, rape and attempted murder about a month ago.

He was released on bail two weeks ago.

But once out, "he reverted to his criminal ways and committed more crimes".

He allegedly terrorised business people "who complained about bogus police officers who robbed them".

When police raided Masombuka's home on Sunday night they found him asleep with an unlicensed firearm by his side

Khoabane said the suspects had since been linked to many serious cases such as murder and armed robberies.

He described the arrests as a breakthrough. He said the suspects could be linked to offences committed both outside Tweefontein and within the former KwaNdebele.
