Pressure on Boxing SA grows

CALLS for the board of Boxing SA to be dissolved are growing.

CALLS for the board of Boxing SA to be dissolved are growing.

Democratic Alliance parliamentarian Donald Lee proposed in his budget speech on July 2 that the Department of Sport and Recreation dissolve Boxing SA.

Lee said: "Boxing SA is in administrative meltdown. Its board has proven to be incapable of delivering on its mandate; for years it has failed to properly manage its finances - a fact to which the auditor-general testifies every year; and, since its inception, its conduct has been defined by infighting, maladministration and corruption.

"In short, it is a disaster zone. To understand the extent of the problem, I would invite the media to visit the BSA website atwww.boxingsa.co.za

"It consists of nothing more than a banner which reads: 'Suspended due to non-payment'."

The chairperson of Parliament's sport portfolio committee Butana Komphela was heard on radio echoing the same sentiments regarding the dissolution of the four-man board.

Attempts to get confirmation from Komphela were unsuccessful.

Now the Gauteng Promoters' Association (GPA) has joined the call of Sport Minister Makhenkesi Stofile to dissolve the board of Peter Ngatane (chairperson), Claude Bassuday, Archie Jonas and Sakhiwo Sodo.

The GPA took this stance in its meeting last weekend when it passed a vote of no confidence in the board, which lost Mxolisi Tsika and Vhulani Baloyi after they cited irreconcilable differences with Ngatane.

GPA chairperson Mxolisi Gumede said: "In light of the very damaging accusations made by ex-CEO Bongani Khumalo against the Boxing SA board members and staff, the GPA executive passed a vote of no confidence in the BSA board."
