A SHINING example of the articulation of a culture of learning, teaching and service will blossom for all to see during the Smart Young Mindz Challenge expo. It takes place in Johannesburg on August 14.
Smart Young Mindz - which is aligned to the curriculum - nurtures pupils in maths, science and technology. There is positive cooperation and collaboration between provincial and district education officials, subject advisers, subject teachers, parents and pupils.
This corporate social investment and responsibility project of Gauteng's sustainable business and economic development, Blue IQ, encourages Grades 8 to 10 pupils to investigate economic development, alternative and renewable energy generation and entrepreneurship challenges, and to generate ideas for commercially viable products or services.
It is supported by the Gauteng education department (GDE) and Sowetan. For Sowetan the challenge is an additional youth development activity of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.
All 16 GDE districts took part. Districts coordinated the mini expos where eight-member teams were evaluated and three teams each are representing districts at the finals.
Subject advisers and teachers played a pivotal supportive role motivating pupils, supervising their projects and ensuring that their exhibitions are attractive and competitive. Winners will get:
l First prize of R45000, with each pupil receiving R7500 and their school earning R7500;
l Second prize of R30000, with each pupil receiving R5000 and their school earning R5000; and
l Third prize of R15000, with each pupil receiving R2500 and their school earning R2500.
