The institute is concerned about the escalating number of H1N1 influenza cases reported in various provinces.
This despite the fact that the cases reported so far have been mild and did not require treatment with anti-viral drugs.
Dr Lucille Blumberg of the institute said yesterday: "We are concerned about the growing number of cases but there is no confirmed community-wide transmission."
At present there are 48 confirmed cases across the country. Of these, 28 are linked to a sporting event that recently took place at a university in Johannesburg.
The Department of Health said yesterday that in line with the World Health Organisation's recent advisory, the increase in the number of cases globally was inevitable.
"Once a total of 100 cases has been confirmed in the country, health authorities will stop the individual laboratory confirmation," said department spokesperson Fidel Hadebe.
