A great day for Toys

TOYS Bonnet's dream came true when he met his hero, Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates player Teko Modise.

TOYS Bonnet's dream came true when he met his hero, Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates player Teko Modise.

Toys and his family flew from Durban to Johannesburg and had lunch with Modise at Moyo's Restaurant yesterday. This was part of Reach For A Dream's desire to fulfil the dreams of children with life-threatening illnesses.

"When I first saw Teko playing he became my hero because I really admire his skills," said Toys, 14, who is a keen soccer player.

"I am pleased to meet Toys today and I am very proud to be involved with Reach For A Dream," said Modise. "I love to make people happy and to see them smile.

"I was also once a youngster and I had dreams - so I can imagine how Toys feels after meeting me."

Modise presented Toys with an autographed Orlando Pirates soccer jersey and a soccer ball.

"My friends are going to be so jealous when they see my shirt," Bonnet said.

A Grade 8 Durban Academy pupil, Toys told Sowetan: "I love soccer. It is my passion.

"I play as a striker for my school and my teammates have given me the nickname Jomo (as in Jomo Sono)."

Diagnosed with a brain tumour just over two years ago, Toys has undergone two operations already.

He has been undergoing chemotherapy and radiography treatment, and is on medication for his condition.

He visits the doctor every month for check-ups.
