THIS month is Savings Month and the South African Saving Institute is embarking on a national savings awareness campaign.

The theme for this year is "Tighten Your Savings Belt".

"Previously we called on South Africans to put on their saving shoes," the institute said.

"Spend wisely to come out of the credit crunch that could wipe out incomes in the absence of a savings plan."

According to the body, the savings trend in SA is "still dismal".

The institute is taking the savings campaign to consumers and pupils.

Advice includes living economically, not buying things you don't need and to start saving for retirement when you get your first job.
