BELGRADE - South African taekwondo king Duncan "The Hammer" Mahlangu has been offered a scholarship by South Korea's government to learn more about the techniques of the sport.

"The Korean government gave him a six-month scholarship to learn more about taekwondo - they will start with the basics," said Master Cho Jung Hyum, the South African taekwondo national team head coach, at the Athletes Village for the World Student Games yesterday.

Mahlangu represented South Africa at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where he was eliminated in the second round. He missed last year's Games in Beijing through injury, but bounced back with a great victory at the Korea Open in Seoul last year.

Cho thanked the Korean government for their support of the sport in South Africa.

"It's good for Duncan to spend more quality time with the best fighters in Korea and learn more about the techniques," he said.

"He will also have time to go to the training camps of the Korean team, which will also form part of his preparations for the 2012 London Olympic Games."
