TWO legends of African literature will headline the Miriam Tlali Reading and Book Club's special session at Xarra Books in Newtown on Friday at 6.30pm.
They are Miriam Tlali and Kenyan Wangui wa Goro.
Tlali is a highly respected scholar, novelist, short story writer and struggle activist who has written several novels and short stories. Her debut novel was Muriel at the Metropolitan (originally titled Between Two Worlds).
Tlali has also written a powerful play, Crimen Injuria, and has received severa awards locally and abroad.
Wa Goro is a respected social critic, academic, writer and translator. He is at present the Trust Africa writer-in-residence at Wits University and a scholar-in-residence at the Centre for African Literary Studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.
Wa Goro is the first of a new generation to work on literary translations in her mother tongue, Gikuyu, as well as in French, Italian and Swahili.
She writes poetry she has performed in Africa, Europe and the US. Her short stories - Heaven and Earth and Deep Sea Fishing - featured in the award-winning Anthology of Love Stories.
Wa Goro is the current president of the Translation Caucus of the African Literature Association, as well as deputy vice-president of the African Literature Association. She is also a director of the Association for the Promotion of Translation in relation to Africa.
The Miriam Tlali Reading and Book Club is a legacy programme created by the South African Literary Awards, a nation-building partnership project of the Department of Arts and Culture, wRite Associates, Nutrend Publishers and Sowetan, to encourage new writers. The awards are linked to the prestigious Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.
Writers, readers and the general public are invited to the club - hosted by Xarra Books - to discuss books, topical literary issues and to take part in other activities to promote the culture of writing and reading.
The club will also host talks and workshops and support book launches.
The programme is set to excite academics, bookworms and light readers. The club will cater for published and unpublished authors who want to join the effort to enhance South Africa's literary scene, reading and writing culture. A particular focus will be given to the youth and women.
A special session will be held at Xarra Books on July 25 and will focus on Lost Colours of the Chameleon, an award-winning novel by Mandla Langa.
