THE eThekwini municipality is to press ahead full steam with its plans to rejuvenate the Warwick triangle precinct and move Early Morning Market traders.
Informal traders in the area have been at loggerheads with the municipality for more than four months over attempts to move them to another site.
Yesterday eThekwini mayor Obed Mlaba made their plans clear. He said despite the outcry the plan was to improve the public transportation system for 2010 and had very strict timelines.
"The funding is obtained from the national Treasury as part of the 2010 improvements for the city, which has strict time frames to adhere to," he said. "The plan is aimed at improving public transportation systems and reduce unnecessary traffic congestion."
Mlaba said the development would create economic opportunities for both informal and formal trade.
"B lack traders will get an opportunity to trade in the city," he said. "At present there are no people of African origin in the inner city."
Mlaba said the city had committed R300million to create a safer transport hub to serve the thousands of commuters.
He said developers of the proposed mall will invest R400 million in the area, making many services such as banking, the post office and retail stores accessible to people in the area for the first time.
"The development will happen in two phases. The first phase will consist of 21500 square metre of gross lettable area, 270 stalls for street traders and a taxi rank that will accommodate about 400 taxi bays.
The second phase consists of about another 10000 square metres that will be developed above the railway lines, next to the existing Berea Station, integrating Warwick Junction with the CBD," he said.
