The Bafana Bafana No1 goalkeeper has signed a three-season extension and both parties are excited about the development.
"I just want to emphasise today that Khune will be staying with us for much longer. His previous deal was due to expire in 2011," explained Chiefs's manager Bobby Motaung yesterday.
The new contract will keep Khune at Naturena until 2014.
The news will excite Amakhosi supporters who were worried at the rumours that Khune was on the verge of clinching a deal with an overseas team.
He was said to be wanted by a number of teams in Europe after a sterling performance at the Fifa Confederations Cup last month.
"Itu has committed himself to us in spite of the rumours that he was heeding abroad. We are happy he is staying and a valuable member of the team."
Chiefs were concerned about the goalkeeper's rumoured move to overseas despite the arrival of talented young goalkeeper Kabelo Metsimetsi.
Metsimetsi, recruited from National First Division club Carara Kicks last week, helped his new employers to win the Eastern Cape Premier's Cup in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
Some of his brilliant saves saw Chiefs emerge 2-1 winners over SuperSport United in the final.
He received rave reviews from the side's goalkeeper coach Rainer Dinkelacker for his brave display.
"He is a warrior," said Dinkelacker on the Chiefs website. "I saw him coming out aggressively for two crosses [against United]. I was really impressed by his performances during the weekend and I have no doubt that if he continues to work hard he will be a great success here."
Amakhosi take on the Iranian national team in a friendly at the Free State Stadium in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
