Pietermaritzburg police have arrested a conman who has allegedly been defrauding suspected criminals outside courts by impersonating a police officer.
The 27-year-old suspect faces extortion and fraud charges.
Senior Superintendent Henry Budhram said the man approached suspects, claiming to be a police officer and told them he had other cases against them and demanded money to have the "cases" withdrawn.
"The suspect had convincing information about the accused, which he apparently gathered during court hearings," Budhram said.
