The SA Medical Association (Sama) said yesterday the decision "to turn down" the revised offer on occupation specific dispensation came after it had consulted its members from all provinces.

"Our members made it clear that they are not accepting what government has signed and placed on the table," said Sama chairperson Mac Lukhele.

"We are appealing to Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi to listen to the doctors and try to meet them halfway. If that fails we will have to take the matter to the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration."

The rejection comes three days after doctors suspended their wildcat strikes.

Yesterday doctors under the banner of SA Doctors United in KwaZulu-Natal threatened to down tools on Friday if the province's health department does not come up with "clear answers" for the fired doctors.

Sama's Denise White said the unions involved in the bargaining process "have three weeks" to make a decision on whether to accept or reject the revised offer.

Yesterday Cameron McIntosh, spokesperson for SA Doctors United, said: "As we speak, large numbers of doctors are planning to leave for private practice, emigrate and also join the private sector."

In Limpopo the strike was called off yesterday after a decision to allow the government time to consult on the matter.
