Armed robbers run out of luck

FOUR armed robbers got more than they bargained for when their luck ran out and their getaway car was involved in an accident, forcing them to flee into the bush on foot.

Police said the four had just robbed Eddies Supermarket at Seabe village in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga, of an undisclosed amount of money before hijacking a car, which overturned about 5km away.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Hastings Chaane said yesterday: "The robbery and hijacking were successful but the car overturned, forcing them to run for the bush."

He said the men entered the supermarket on Saturday afternoon pretending to be customers and ordered the cashiers at gunpoint to give them all the money.

They took a car from a man who had come to the shop but rolled it a short while later.

The police found a cellphone belonging to one of the men and later arrested a suspect.

Chaane said the man's three alleged accomplices - Piet Khumalo, Oupa Thema and Doctor Mashishi - are still on the run.
