Two shot dead while boozing

ESHOWE police on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast have launched a manhunt for the killers of two people gunned down on Saturday night.

ESHOWE police on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast have launched a manhunt for the killers of two people gunned down on Saturday night.

Police spokesperson Inspector Mbongeni Mdlalose said a group of people were drinking beer on the farm Mbelesi in Ntumeni when unknown assailants showed up and opened fire without saying a word.

"A group of people were drinking when unknown people fired randomly at them, killing Magcekeni Gumede, 51, and Skhumbuzo Biyela, 31, on the scene," Mdlalose said.

"Nobody else was injured. Police are investigating two murder cases and unfortunately no one saw anything because it was dark."

Mdlalose said a shotgun was used in the shooting.

Meanwhile, Empangeni taxi owner Mthethowomuntu Richard Ndlovu, 32, briefly appeared in the Empangeni magistrate court on Friday, facing three charges of possessing illegal firearms.

Ndlovu was arrested by the Eshowe crime intelligence unit with the help of the Empangeni dog unit and public order policing unit on Thursday.

He was caught with an R1 rifle and ammunition, a pump action shotgun with a scratched out serial number and a 7,65 pistol.

"The R1 rifle was identified as belonging to the SANDF but was not reported stolen.

"All guns were sent for ballistic testing to investigate the possibility of their having been used in crime activities before.

"The possibility that the R1 rifle was also used in the slaughter of 20 rhinos in the Zululand area recently is also being probed," the police said.

Ndlovu will appear in court again this week on Friday.
