Ndous clash relives Hearns-Hagler epic bout

A boxing match similar to the war of attrition between Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler on April 15, 1985 is on the cards on Saturday between Philip Ndou and Lovemore Ndou.

A boxing match similar to the war of attrition between Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler on April 15, 1985 is on the cards on Saturday between Philip Ndou and Lovemore Ndou.

Hearns, the taller, called Hagler a midget. That brought the ire of the undisputed WBC, WBA and IBF middleweight champion.

The Ndous (not related) have exchanged ugly words in verbal sparring.

The younger Ndou, Philip, 32, promised to end the illustrious career of the 37-year-old Lovemore to which he responded: "A wise man knows his limit. Philip does not know his - that is where he is going to get hurt."

They will collide at Emperors Palace for the IBO welterweight title. Their fight, bankrolled by Gree Air Conditioners, will be presented by Golden Gloves.

The clash could relive the memory of the super bout between Hearns and Hagler which took place at Caesars Palace in America.

Hearns was like a matador, using his reach well, while moving from side-to-side while Hagler, the bull, kept going forward looking to get on the inside.

Their first round was pure violence. They hit each other with mighty blows - Hagler threw 82 punches, just one less than Hearns. Hagler came out fast, hard. Hearns tried to hold off Hagler with his jab, but the former had little left.

A short left and a smashing right to Hearns' head staggered him backward across the ring in the third. Hagler unloaded a right hand-left hook combination and an overhand right against Hearns' head.

Hearns, dazed, tried to clinch but failed - he went down and it was over. Hagler took home $5.7million, Hearns $5.4 million.

Philip, the taller, worked on the same strategy during his workout last week. Lovemore typified Hagler as he perfected his moves getting inside during his sparring with Tshifhiwa Munyai last week. But how much will Philip and Lovemore get paid for what promises to be brutality?
