Metrorail and Ndebele fail commuters

THIS is an open letter to the Minister of Transport though it is doubtful whether anything will be done about it.

It pertains to the bad service delivery from Metrorail and its staff to our people, the majority of whom happen to be black.

Metrorail prides itself in providing two business trains from Pretoria to Johannesburg.

But what it fails to mention is that no matter how excellent a service it provides with these two trains, both are mostly empty compared with the commuter trains it runs on the same lines.

These commuter trains, which ferry thousands of passengers every day, are more often than not late and always overcrowded.

One of the fundamental rights enshrined in our Constitution is the right to dignity.

With these trains commuters are daily packed in like sardines and if the trains are late people are not informed of the delay.

Surely people have a right to know. I urge, no, dare the minister, or the executives of Metrorail, to take the train daily to get a feel for the conditions under which people have to travel every day.

Some lose their jobs because trains are constantly late and when on time are packed to such an extent that one is unable to get on.

And if one manages squeeze in one is bound to be fondled by strangers or robbed.

Honourable minister, stop patting yourselves on the back for a job well done on the business trains or the Gautrain, when the majority of our people still have to endure unbearable conditions commuting daily

All we desire is decent transportation that will keep our their dignity intact.
