BELGRADE - Rising US-based swimming star Leone Vorster plans to announce her arrival on the global front by doing well at the World Student Games to add to the success of South Africa.
The Polokwane-born swimmer has registered to take part in three events - the 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle and 400m freestyle - at the 25th instalment of the biennial competition, which begins on Sunday.
A business marketing student at the University of Arizona, Vorster came close to winning a medal in her debut at the 24th World Student Games in Bangkok, Thailand, in 2007 but was bundled out in the semifinals.
Relaxed
Speaking to Sowetan yesterday at the end of a training session, a relaxed Vorster said she was in Belgrade to win medals.
"When I came here, I read that Penny Heyns started her medal overhaul at the World Student Games before going on to monopolise the Olympics. I have the same dream. The colours of the medals are not that important. The objective is to see myself going to the podium and contributing to the success of Team SA."
Vorster won gold at the continental championships in Senegal two years ago.
