no cutting corners

THE much-anticipated clash of heavy hitters Phillipp "Time Bomb" Ndou and Lovemore "Black Panther" Ndou next Saturday could be decided by opposing corner men Welcome Ncita and Harold Volbrecht.

THE much-anticipated clash of heavy hitters Phillipp "Time Bomb" Ndou and Lovemore "Black Panther" Ndou next Saturday could be decided by opposing corner men Welcome Ncita and Harold Volbrecht.

Ncita will assist Michele Castellan in Phillip's corner, while Volbrecht will shout instructions for Lovemore.

Ncita is a former SA flyweight and IBF junior featherweight champion. He has matured into a masterful boxing tutor who has produced national champions.

He is credited with the success of fighters such as Vuyani Bungu, Mbulelo Botile, Hawk Makepula and Mhikiza Myekeni.

Apparently he trained them at the Eyethu Gym of Mzimase Mnguni in Mdantsane even before he retired in 1998.

Volbrecht reigned supreme for 16 years as SA welterweight king. As a trainer he produced world champions Brian Mitchell, Philip Holiday, Jan Bergman, Sebastiaan Rothmann and Corrie Sanders.

There has been plenty of trash talk and tempers have flared up in the build-up to the fight that is part of Promoter Rodney Berman's "Triple Thunder" bill at Emperors Palace.

This suggests that the form book will be thrown out of the window once Eastern Cape referee Lulama Mtya says "box on".

Mtya has to be bold in every decision he takes. Len Hunt, the IBO representative in South Africa, will be fight supervisor while Deon Duarte (Western Cape), Dave Moretti (US) and Bruce MacTavish (Philippines) will be judges.

Analyst Terry Pettifer said Phillip, 32, started the war talk by harping on Lovemore's age.

"Once we're in the ring I won't have any respect for your age. I will knock you out," he had said.

Phillip, the former SA and WBA intercontinental featherweight, WBC International and WBU super featherweight champion, promised to end Lovemore's illustrious career that started in 1993 under Volbrecht.

Lovemore, 37, responded by saying: "Listen, bigmouth, I'm gonna knock the sh*t out of you. Who do you f**king think you are, running me down, f**king Pinocchio."

Lovemore, the former IBF welterweight king, is now based in Australia, where he has lived comfortably for almost 15 years.

Meanwhile Ncita will also be in the corner of Simphiwe "V12" Vetyeka when he takes on tough Philippines fighter Eric Barcelona for the vacant IBO bantamweight title in one of the undercard fights .

Volbrecht will also be in the corner of Thomas "Tommy Gun" Oosthuizen when he takes Jared "The Storm" Lovett, who is trained by Colin Nathan, for the IBO youth light heavyweight belt. The action starts at 8pm and will be broadcast live on SuperSport.
