The KwaZulu-Natal 2010 strategic projects unit at eThekwini municipality and organisers of major events, including the Durban July, have held talks to plan events during 2010 to make sure that there is no conflict and overcrowding when the world meets here in June 2010.
Further meetings are to be held, amid suggestions that the Vodacom Durban July should make way for the soccer tournament next year.
Yesterday acting Durban tourism CEO Perry Moodley confirmed that talks to have major events on the Durban calendar for next year moved would be held to avoid conflict and to stretch the season to provide a friendly and high standard of service to visitors.
Moodley said though a decision had not yet been made, talks were under way.
"There are a whole lot of events, including sporting events calendar, that will coincide with World Cup games. What we want to make clear to the people is that no event will be cancelled, but we are considering that the major events be shifted to after the World Cup," he said.
Moodley said a public announcement would be made as soon as the decisions had been made.
"We would be shifting certain major events to prevent overcrowding in our accommodation facilities. We also want to provide a safe and efficient transportation and service because within a kilometre from the World Cup stadium there cannot be another major event happening at the same time," he said.
Gill Simpkins of Gold Circle, the organisers of the Vodacom Durban July, yesterday confirmed that there had been talks of that nature, but no decision on whether next year's event might be moved.
"At the moment we are concentrating on this year's event," she said.
The Comrades Marathon, which has over the years taken place on June 16, was for the first time this year shifted to May after controversy over it not being an appropriate eventfor Youth Day.
Meanwhile, Fifa has gone on record as saying that all existing events should be used as 2010 activation opportunities.
