'BE CAREFUL SWIMMING IN KZN SEA'

THE National Sea Rescue Institute yesterday issued a warning to holiday-makers to be careful when swimming at Kwazulu-Natal beaches.

THE National Sea Rescue Institute yesterday issued a warning to holiday-makers to be careful when swimming at Kwazulu-Natal beaches.

This after three people, including a fisherman, drowned in the sea on the province's South Coast beaches on Wednesday.

NSRI spokesman Chris Lambinon advised holiday- makers not to swim on beaches with no life- guards.

"Children must always go into the water under adult supervision. Adult swimmers must take care not to go out too deep and be careful of the rip current, which is the biggest cause of drownings in the province," Lambinon said.

A man, 44, drowned at Glenmore Beach near Margate after he was washed off the rocks. His 16-year-old son tried to save him and also got into trouble.

Ubuntu life guards managed to pull them both out of the water, initiated CPR and handed the patient to paramedics.

"Owing to the time that the patient spent in the water, all resuscitation attempts failed and the patient was declared dead on the scene," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

Netcare 911 Margate responded to another drowning at Caribbean Estates beach near Port Edward at 1pm.

A 23-year-old man's body was pulled from the sea by crew members from the Port Edward NSRI base after he had drowned.

"NSRI volunteers assisted the doctor to administer CPR before a Netcare 911 ambulance crew arrived on the scene, but all their efforts to resuscitate him failed," said Lambinon.

He said in the third incident a fisherman drowned at Port Edward.
