COMORES - A second child might have survived the Comoros jet crash and a hospital on the main island in the Indian Ocean archipelago was put on alert yesterday to treat the victim.

"It seems another child was found alive early in the morning. We have no other details because we have not seen him," said a doctor who spoke on condition of anonymity.

He said the survivor might still be with rescuers at sea.

A 13-year-old girl is so far the only survivor of the 153 people aboard the Yemenia airliner that plunged into the sea as it came in to land at Moroni airport early on Tuesday.

Comoran youths staged a protest at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris yesterday over flight conditions between France and the Comoros after a Yemeni Airbus crash left 153 feared dead.

Questions mounted over Yemenia Air's safety record, and why the jet - banned from French airspace and described by Comorans as a "flying coffin" - was allowed to carry French passengers from Sanaa onwards.

Yesterday the boarding of a Yemenia flight to Sanaa was blocked, and it left with only 60 passengers, officials said.

Bacar Soilihi, a French-Comoran, said they were protesting over "the deplorable conditions in which they make us travel once we are outside European airspace". - Sapa-AFP
