The community supported the march, whichfocused on the 2009-10 municipal budget. We, the PCO andour supporters, feel that the budget does not cater for the poor. It states that the municipality will be selling land for about R250million.
Through previous engagement with the municipality we were informed that there is no land to build RDP houses and the municipality is trying to acquire privately-owned land.
The other issues raised were the rampant corruption related to housing allocation and the inaction of the municipality to make the budget available for slum dwellers.
The municipality andGauteng housing department have no concrete and coherent plan to combat corruption. The slums in Soul City, Tudor Shaft, Baghdad and Bull Brand are not serviced as the Constitution demands.
There is a shortage of toilets and rubbish bins and the health of the people suffers.
Municipal Speaker Noluthando Mangole told us that the municipality would not respond to us until we provide evidence of housing corruption.
When the PCO demonstrated we were exercising our constitutional right. We went out as citizens seeking answers from elected representatives.
The municipality is in breach of the Constitution and it plays dirty politics at the expense of the poor.
