Suspected serial rapist arrested

A 37-YEAR-OLD man suspected of raping seven women was arrested in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, yesterday, police said.

A 37-YEAR-OLD man suspected of raping seven women was arrested in Bekkersdal, west of Johannesburg, yesterday, police said.

"His modus operandi was to drive along the N12, R28 and R500 roads offering women hitch-hikers a lift in his silver-blue Mazda sedan," said Constable Busi Monoe.

"The man would stop the car, claiming that there was something wrong with it. He would then remove the rear licence plates of his car and then proceed driving."

He would then drive for a few metres before stopping the car in the bushes and raping his victims at gunpoint. He would then drive off, leaving the victim in the bushes.

He was caught after police spotted his car on the N12.

Police were investigating nine cases against him - seven of rape and two of attempted rape.

He was expected to appear in the Westonaria regional court today.

Anyone that was a victim of such an act should call Detective Inspector Kgomotso Manthata on 079-340-6175 or 011-278-5300, police said yesterday. - Sapa
