Superintendent Mtati Tana said the accused appeared briefly in the court on Monday and were taken to the holding cells below the court around midday.
One of the men grabbed a police officer's firearm and fired off a shot towards the entrance of the cells. The suspects then fled on foot through an open gate. No one was injured during the shooting.
The men were facing charges of armed robbery and rape.
