Co-written by talented writers Jhamil Qubeka and Mlandu Sikwebu, UMalusi will be officially launched on July 1 in East London.
It opens at selected Ster-Kinekor and Nu-Metro cinemas from July 10.
UMalusi is an introspective riches to rags story about spoilt brat Malusi Mati, played by Sivu Nobongoza.
Life has been a breeze for him but the tide turns when, after a night of pleasure, tragedy strikes and this spiteful and drugged boy is forced to leave his comforts behind and go into hiding.
The film features new and established actors such as Lucas Sithole of soapie Generations fame.
Qubeka says the idea of the film began a long time ago though they only started writing the script in 2006. He says the story was inspired by reality.
"The film came from our past experiences and things that we see happening around us now," Qubeka says.
"The depiction of the youth in the film is edgy and stupendously gritty.
"In order to carry the story's multilayered narrative structure, the film uses three separate tonal grades representing the lead character's converging yet highly contrasting world," he says.
The self-funded film was shot in the township with most of the small crew and extras drawn from around East London and Mdantsane.
UMalusi premiered last year at the Durban Film Festival.
Qubeka says the film will teach South Africans to do things for themselves.
"It will hopefully inspire people to tell their own stories," Qubeka says.
