We must continue to believe that some good will come out of the embarrassment that continues to blight Auckland Park.
Former board chairperson Kanyi Mkonza has strongly alluded to some top managers at the SABC using the organisation for their personal enrichment.
Though Mkonza has not mentioned names, the allegations are serious enough to make anyone who cares about the public broadcaster sit up and pay attention.
The unions seem to corroborate Mkonza's version that there might have been looting by some senior managers.
It is quite possible, as some have hinted, that Mkonza is being opportunistic. But even if she is, we need to establish whether there is any truth to the very serious allegations she makes. The unions seem to think that something is rotten and has been for some time now.
We therefore support the IFP's Musa Zondi in calling for a judicial commission of inquiry into the extent of the rot at the SABC.
Without getting ahead of ourselves, we hope that the findings become the basis for a new corporate governance regime to regulate how the crisis-prone public broadcaster is ruled.
We hope that civil society will exert some pressure on the politicians to appoint the judicial inquiry that will hopefully give meaning to the SABC being a public broadcaster and not a state propaganda machine.
