ANC bigwigs battle for support

LOBBYING for leadership positions of the ANC in three districts of Limpopo is in full swing ahead of the regional conference to be held from September 4 to 6.

LOBBYING for leadership positions of the ANC in three districts of Limpopo is in full swing ahead of the regional conference to be held from September 4 to 6.

The party's national executive committee has ordered provinces to hold their regional conferences before the end of September.

According to ANC policy all regions should have held conferences soon after the provincial conference last year.

Limpopo held its regional conference in July last year at the University of Venda. A year later only two of the five districts had held their conferences.

The Waterberg and Sekhukhune districts held their conferences in February and March this year, while Capricorn, Mopani and Vhembe were likely to hold theirs in July, August and September, respectively.

Capricorn, Mopani and Vhembe districts postponed their conferences in January and February this year because branches were preparing for the national general elections.

The call by the NEC has seen ANC bigwigs in Limpopo braving the cold weather to hold secret meetings in the evenings at secluded venues to win support from branches.

Some were seen recruiting members in awkward venues such as shebeens, soccer fields and schools before the annual general meetings by branches.

In the Capricorn district 13 branches will take part in the elections.

ANC regional secretary Nelson Keetse and chairperson Chuene Malebana are likely to battle for the top position in these elections.
