Zuma must check his priorities

Our struggle for a living wage is no different from the struggles waged by Cosatu in 2008, which gave rise to the occupation-specific dispensation that benefited nurses and other health workers.

We cannot be told that we never struggled against apartheid when our profession produced political activists such as Dr VJ Ramlakan, Dr Percy Mahlathi, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, Dr Billy Ramakgopa, Dr Diliza Mji and many others.

The government has increased the number of cabinet members to 34 at a cost of more than R1billion, but doctors cannot get higher wages.

Newly appointed premiers, ministers and MEC's are buying very expensive vehicles. Why are we given peanuts? What is good for the goose must be good for the gander.

Zwelinzima Vavi fully supported the strike by nurses and teachers. Where is he now?

He is siding with the new administration. We all need his militancy that Nehawu and Sadtu utilised against the previous administration.

Taxi owners can cause havoc on the streets without any reprimand from ANC ministers, but doctors, who are not even blocking hospitals, are publicly denounced by ANC politicians.

I bet you MPs will vote for high increases for themselves. We spend many years at tertiary institutions but are paid very little.

Check your priorities Mr President.
