THE Miriam Tlali Reading and Book Club, a legacy programme created by the South African Literary Awards, was launched at Xarra Books in Newtown, Johannesburg, this month.
The awards are a nation-building partnership project of the Department of Arts and Culture, wRite Associates, Nutrend Publishers and Sowetan to encourage new writers. They are linked to the prestigious Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.
The closing date for submission of entries is July 29 for the National Poet Laureate Prize and several other exciting literary categories.
Extracts of 43 writers honoured between 2005 and 2007 are carried in the impressive omnibus, Band of Troubadours , launched by former arts and culture minister Pallo Jordaan.
Tlali, a highly respected scholar, novelist, short-story writer and struggle activist, has written several novels and short stories, including her debut novel, Muriel At the Metropolitan (originally titled Between Two Worlds).
She has also written a powerful play, Crimen Injuria, and has received awards locally and abroad.
Morakabe "Raks" Seakhoa of wRite Associates, who are the founders of the South African Literary Awards, said the Book Club sought to honour Tlali and to celebrate and honour her life, times and contribution to South African literature.
The Miriam Tlali Reading and Book Club is due to convene on every third Saturday of the month at 2pm until 4pm.
The next reading and discussion session - with Xarra serving as a proud hosting partner - will be held on July 25 and the programme will focus on discussing the Lost Colours of the Chameleon, a novel by Mandla Langa, which won the 2009 Commonwealth Africa Region Prize.
