Africa's first CAF Women's Player of the Year was among distinguished performers honoured by BMF at their corporate gala dinner held at Emperors Palace on Friday, with the likes of Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Lindiwe Sisulu and Cope co-deputy president Mbhazima Shilowa in attendance.
Matlou was acknowledged with a youth category award - presented by Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane - for bringing the CAF award to our shores for the first time .
Not even in her wildest dreams did she imagine such an honour would ever come her way, the striker said.
"To be in the presence of the country's best business people was overwhelming. I'm happy that people at that level would appreciate the things I do," Matlou said.
Meanwhile, selections are under way at Edenvale for players who will turn out for the country's Under-20 team, Basetsana.
The team will take up African opposition in matches that will serve as qualifiers for the Under-20 World Cup in Germany next year. Basetsana have never qualified for this tournament, losing out to Namibia the last time.
Team manager Fran Hilton-Smith said the technical staff, which includes coach Augustine Makalakalane, would treat this as the first round of selections, with the second phase taking place at the Sasol League play-offs in August.
"We expect to have about 40 players in the camp. They are from all over the country and this way we have given everyone a chance to try out.
"The players are from roadshows and from tournaments such as Dlala Ntombazana which were held in various regions and provinces," Hilton-Smith said.
