America are one of the eight countries that qualified to take part in this quadrennial soccer spectacle, which is also known as the appetiser to the Fifa World Cup.
Guided by Bob Bradley, America defied the odds to defeat world number one-ranked country, Spain, 2-0 in a semifinal match in Mangaung on Wednesday. Bradley has assembled a formidable side that includes hard-working players like Oguchi Onyewu, Donovan London, Tim Howard and Jozy Altidore.
America were among the laughing stock of the tournament after losing their opening two matches, 3-1 to reigning world champions Italy and 3-0 to Brazil. But they surprised everyone by drubbing African champions, the Pharaohs of Egypt, 3-0 in their first-round match to join Brazil in their group in the semifinals. America are also still busy with the qualifiers for the 2010 World Cup where Bradley is hoping they will continue with their incredible soccer display.
Their success in this tournament comes hardly a week after Fifa president Sepp Blatter announced that US President Barack Obama will come to South Africa for the opening ceremony of the 2010 Cup.
The United States of America Mission in SA congratulated Bradley and company for reaching the final: "The US Mission community is proud that our team will play in the final and looks forward to supporting the red, white and blue against another worthy opponent in Johannesburg on June 28."
