SMALL businesspeople within the Midvaal local municipality yesterday threatened to stage a long consumer boycott of rates and taxes if their demands were not met.

They also threatened to make the municipality ungovernable. Hundreds of small businesspeople and residents of Meyerton and Sicelo informal settlement demonstrated outside the DA-led municipality's premises before handing over their memorandum.

They chanted pro-ANC slogans and anti-DA chants.

Community leader Pule Pilane said they were demanding that the voices of small businesspeople and residents be heard.

He said designated vendor sites should be allocated to small businesses in Meyerton.

Pilane added that the 438 stands which are to be developed in Sicelo should have business sites.

"Midvaal is not the property of the DA and their white minority.

"We all belong to the municipality - both black and white," said Pilane.

He said public toilets should also be erected in Meyerton for shoppers and traders.

Midvaal speaker Ron Smith accepted the memorandum and promised to report back to them after he had consulted with the municipality.
