The warning came after a wage agreement could still not be reached in a dispute round of the National Bargaining Council for the Chemicals Industry on Wednesday and yesterday.
"A strike certificate has now been issued to trade unions," Solidarity said yesterday.
Solidarity spokesperson Jaco Kleynhans said trade unions had agreed not to give the notice of a strike before the final mediation session, scheduled for next Wednesday. The mediation session is regarded as the last way out to avert a possible strike in the sector.
Following the dispute round that continued in the sector, employers still offered a wage increase of only 6percent, despite unions demanding a 12percent increase.
Wage negotiations started in May this year and nearly 10000 workers are employed in this sector. Companies involved in the talks include Engen, Sasol, PetroSA, Shell and BP. - I-Net Bridge
