Yesterday, five heavy duty vehicles travelling on the N3 near Van Reenen's Pass were swept off the road by the wind, leaving their operators injured.
Strong winds brought the traffic to a standstill as authorities were forced to close the road.
The traffic was diverted from Van Reenen's Pass to other routes such as the N11.
The most affected motorists were those travelling between Johannesburg and Durban.
Cele urged motorist to exercise patience as traffic was moving very slowly.
He said motorists should be on the lookout for the possibility of runaway fires because of very dry and windy conditions.
Frustrated truck driver Bongani Khuzwayo said he spent hours in the traffic.
He said the situation was affecting truck drivers who were paid per load delivered.
"Lost time affects our salaries as we are forced to meet delivery deadlines."
Another driver, who escaped death by a whisker when his heavy truck and trailer were pushed off the road, said he was delighted that "God gave him a second chance".
