Taxi drivers say though the minimum wage set by the Department of Labour was not enough, they have far more pressing issues that needed attention.

Most of them said they made much more than the R1993 set by the department.

"Some of us get R3000 depending on the understanding between the owner and driver," said driver William Matsaung, who operates from Alexandra to Rosebank.

Yesterday the department announced a minimum wage in the taxi sector, with rank marshals' wages increasing from R1392 to R1546.

The increase is effective from July 1 and will stay on until June 2010.

Matsaung, a father of three, said he earned R500 a week.

"I want our employers to formalise the industry," he said. "I want to be paid through a bank and not in cash. I do not even have an unemployment insurance fund membership."
