"Some of us get R3000 depending on the understanding between the owner and driver," said driver William Matsaung, who operates from Alexandra to Rosebank.
Yesterday the department announced a minimum wage in the taxi sector, with rank marshals' wages increasing from R1392 to R1546.
The increase is effective from July 1 and will stay on until June 2010.
Matsaung, a father of three, said he earned R500 a week.
"I want our employers to formalise the industry," he said. "I want to be paid through a bank and not in cash. I do not even have an unemployment insurance fund membership."
